Dear Friend,

This weekend we set aside time to honor our brave men and women who have died in military service to our country. Unfortunately, during this important week, Congress has chosen to utilize the military as an engine of social change, rather than joining with all Americans in appreciation and respect for the true purpose of our armed forces.

On the eve of Memorial Day, the House has passed a bill--over the concerns of many high ranking officers--that paves the way for a reversal of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" (DADT) policy. The timing of this rushed legislation reveals a growing divide between our leaders in Washington and our values across America.

Since the end of the Civil War, Americans have celebrated Memorial Day and the men and women who have paid the ultimate price to protect our freedom. We pray daily in thanks for those who have served before, and for protection of those who serve today.

Memorial Day reminds us each year of the debt we owe to the members of our armed forces, as well as the importance of the freedoms they protect with their lives--most notably, freedom of speech and freedom of religion. At Focus on the Family we believe that these rights are given by God and should be protected by government, but are not created by government itself.

This week, however, we are reminded that Washington believes these rights originated with government, and that government may change or deny them to advance a politically correct agenda. We shared with you a few weeks ago that a vote to repeal DADT could come before the November election. But as I write this, the House has already passed the bill. The speed of this push came as a surprise to just about everyone involved.

This leads us to ask certain questions:

- Why the rush? We hope the answer is not that those who control Congress are attempting to change as much of America as possible before the next election.

Many in the military are requesting more research into the ramifications of open homosexuality for the functioning of our military. And many more Americans are telling Washington that they do not support this reshaping of social policy. Wouldn't it be better to have a fuller review and more deliberate discussion?
- What does this bill mean for American safety? We hope that advocates of this bill are every bit as interested in preserving American security as they are in advancing their own agenda. But can they prove, today, that abolishing DADT would keep American civilians and our men and women in uniform safe?
- Why choose Memorial Day Weekend to speed this bill through the House? We hope that it was mere coincidence and not an attempt to transform a time of remembrance into a political platform. But with so many other pressing matters facing our country today, why tie up the Capitol with this controversial bill, during this week?

These questions give us reason to believe that pushing this bill through Congress is about more than just a single military policy. Instead, their objective seems to be to advance an overall political agenda to reshape American culture, using our military as a political experiment.

That is why we are committed to sharing the truth about how Washington's decisions impact our military, our families and our religious liberties--but we couldn't do this without you. While we await answers from Congress to the questions above, let us take this opportunity to ask you:

Do you approve of our military being politicized in this way?

Do you feel safer now that our military--already overextended on several real fronts, busy safeguarding our freedoms--finds new obstacles in its path?

Do you approve of Congress' "rush to change" during Memorial Day week?

If you're like me, the answer is "no."

In these trying times, as we work to protect our religious liberties and strengthen our nation's families, will you consider supporting Focus on the Family?

We are so appreciative of your commitment to make our work possible. Our nation, and our nation's families, face great challenges. But we serve a Lord, and share a love, that is greater than any obstacle or fear. Will you please stand with us and prayerfully consider supporting the work of Focus on the Family?

Our children deserve to inherit a nation that respects the liberties our "best and brightest" have dedicated their lives to protect. Your prayers for our work and our nation, as well as your financial support, enable us to protect that promise for those who follow.

For faith and family,
Tom Minnery
